Canada Soccer, the sport’s governing body in Canada, is defending two of its brightest young national team stars and condemning a series of racist slurs that were directed toward them on social media.

Jordyn Huitema, 19, a women’s national team player from Chilliwack, and Alphonso Davies, 20, a men’s team player, were attacked by racist internet trolls after Huitema posted an Instagram photo of the couple posing together on a boat in Ibiza, Spain.

The post generated thousands of comments including many hateful ones from mostly anonymous accounts objecting to the pair’s interracial relationship. Huitema, a forward for Paris Saint Germain, is white, while Davies, a star left-back with Bayern Munich, is Black.

“Canada Soccer stands firm against racism … around the world,” Canada Soccer said on Twitter. “We are both disappointed and appalled with the hateful comments recently made to members of our National Teams through social media. Share love not hate and work together for a better world.”
John Herdman, coach of the men’s national team, and Bev Priestman, coach of Canada’s women’s squad, both expressed disgust with the online abuse directed toward the two players.

“We see the best in human nature from Alphonso (and) Jordyn, two kids I’ve worked with, and then the worst with the moronic comments from the small minority of humans that will just never get it,” Herdman said.
