Hackers behind pro-Islamic group exposed by Group-IB

By

Russian security vendor Group-IB has revealed what it says are the identities behind a hacking group known as the United Islamic Cyber Force which openly supports radical Islamic movements.

The UICF first came to prominence in January 2014 and has had about 40 members over the years, hailing from Pakistan, Indonesia, Morocco, Algeria and Kosovo, the Russian vendor said in a detailed blog post.

It provided a list of five major campaigns in which the group had participated:

#OpFrance: A joint attack on French Internet resources in January 2015 organised along with other groups known as Fallaga Team, AnonGhost and Cyber Caliphate after the terrorist attack on the Parisian editorial offices of Charlie Hebdo.

#OpIsrael: "Hackintifada" directed against Israeli websites and online resources. The first attack occurred on 7 April, 2013, when there were disruptions in the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, then the attacks became a tradition and occurred every year on 7 April.

#OpIndia: An attack on Indian state resources initiated by the famous group Anonymous because of the blocking of a number of video hosting and file-sharing resources in the country and a crackdown on piracy.

#Free_Palestine: An operation to draw attention to the Israel-Palestinian issue.

#FreeAlAqsa: An attack in response to the Israeli prohibition on visiting the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Group-IB said the UICF was connected with about 60 other groups. A majority of attacks by the UICK was defacing websites of carrying out DDoS attacks.

It said information about attacks was disseminated on various social media groups.

"Their low level of technical training, a sense of impunity and excessive ambitions cause hacktivists not to pay due attention to their own security, despite the various instructions for ensuring anonymity popular in their milieu," said Dmitry Volkov, head of the Threat Intelligence Department and co-founder of Group-IB.

Members of UICF have been listed on the Group-IB website with details about many members.
